Pope Leo XIV Calls for Global Peace in First Sunday Address

In his first Sunday address as head of the Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV issued a heartfelt plea for peace, urging an end to global conflicts and emphasizing the human cost of war.

Speaking from the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica to a large crowd in St. Peter’s Square, the newly elected pontiff called on world leaders to pursue dialogue and reconciliation. “I would also like to address the powerful people of the world, repeating the ever-relevant appeal: no more war,” he said. “The immense tragedy of the Second World War ended 80 years ago, and now we face the tragedy of a third world war in pieces.”

Reflecting on several ongoing crises, Pope Leo called for a “true and lasting peace” in Ukraine, where war has entered its third year. He expressed deep sorrow over the ongoing violence in Gaza, urging an immediate ceasefire and the delivery of humanitarian aid, and welcomed a ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, expressing hope for a durable resolution.

“I carry in my heart the suffering of the beloved Ukrainian people,” he said. “May everything possible be done to achieve a genuine, lasting peace. May prisoners be released, and children reunited with their families.”

On Gaza, he said, “I am deeply hurt by what is happening. May a ceasefire take effect immediately, may humanitarian aid reach the civilian population, and may all hostages be freed.”

Turning to South Asia, the Pope noted recent developments: “I was happy to hear of a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. I hope that upcoming negotiations may lead to a lasting agreement.”

His remarks came amid new diplomatic activity: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin are pursuing divergent peace proposals, while in Gaza, Israel has resumed military operations after the collapse of a temporary truce.

Pope Leo also led the traditional Regina Caeli prayer, honoring the Virgin Mary.

The pontiff was elected on Thursday after the death of Pope Francis and a two-day conclave in Vatican City. He celebrated his first Mass as Pope in the Sistine Chapel on Friday and addressed cardinals on Saturday, calling himself an "unworthy choice" and vowing to carry forward the "precious legacy" of his predecessor.

Highlighting the Church’s role in modern society, Pope Leo underscored the importance of missionary work, dialogue, and support for marginalized communities. He said he chose the name Leo in honor of Pope Leo XIII, known for his teachings on social justice.

He also addressed contemporary challenges, suggesting that developments in artificial intelligence and other technologies underscored the Church’s vital role in defending human dignity and justice.

Pope Leo is scheduled to be formally inaugurated at a Mass in St. Peter’s Square on 18 May.
